DEFINITION
Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon which can lead to its degeneration. The achilles tendon is the large tendon located in the back of the leg that inserts into the heel. Its can develop gradually without a history of trauma. The pain can be shooting , burning or even a strong piercing pain.
The condition is aggravated by activities that cause repeated stress on the tendon as well as prolonged standing. It is a common problem in athletes, especially long distance runners. Achilles tendonitis must be treated as if left untreated it may lead to weakening and rupture of the tendon.
It is a difficult injury to treat in athletes due to their high level of activity and refusal to stop or slow down their training. Pain with the first step out of bed in the morning is a common complaint. Another common complaint is pain that starts upon walking after long periods of rest. This pain usually decreases with activity.
CAUSE
The most common cause of Achilles tendonitis is over-pronation. This occurs in the walking process, when the arch collapses with weight bearing, increasing the stress on the achilles tendon. Other factors include improper shoe selection, inadequate stretching before engaging in athletics, a short achilles tendon, direct trauma to the tendon, and finally heel bone deformity.
TREATMENT
Athletes, particularly runners, should always go through a thorough stretching program to properly warm-up the muscles. They should decrease the distance of their walk or run, apply ice after the activity and avoid any uphill climbs. They should use an orthotic device, heel cup, or heel cradle for extra support. A heel cup or heel cradle elevates the heel and hereby reduces stress and pressure on the achilles tendon. The device should be made with light-weight, shock absorbing materials.
If the problem persists, consult your foot doctor.
